Protecting Your Home From Fading

Window Film helps prevent the Interior of your Home from Fading

Sunshine coming through the windows of your home on a beautiful day is something we all enjoy. When it is a cloudy day, we want to open up our window coverings and get as much natural light in as possible. The sunlight lifts our spirits and offers some energy savings!

The sun offers many benefits, but the UV rays can cause damage to the interior furnishings and materials in our home. Direct sunlight can cause premature ageing to materials; they prematurely lose their colour, can discolour, become brittle, crack, and break down.

Even on a cloudy day the UV rays are present. We don’t want to close our drapes and blinds all day, so what is the solution? Many new windows offer some UV protection, but this protection is limited. Applying window film prevents almost 100% of the harmful UV rays from coming into your home.

Materials in your home that are vulnerable to Fading

Hardwood Floors

Some wood flooring is more durable than others, but all hardwood flooring is susceptible to fading caused by direct sunlight. Some wood is more photosensitive than others, and will lighten or darken depending on the wood. Staining versus painting will also contribute to the durability of the flooring when it comes to how quickly fading begins. Laminate flooring that has the look of wood is considered quite durable. Sometimes a fix to faded hardwood flooring can be sanding and retreating, but the best solution is to prevent sun damage in the first place.

Carpet

Carpet and area rugs exposed to direct sunlight will fade, discolour, and even the fibres will break down over time. Carpets made from natural fabrics, such as wool and dyes are less sensitive to direct sunlight than some of the less expensive man-made materials.

Furniture

In a room that has a lot of direct sunlight, measures should be put in place to prevent furniture from being damaged by harmful UV rays. Fabric, wood, and even acrylic furniture begin to lose its colour and become brittle and damaged. Some materials are more durable than others, but all over time will start to lose its lustre. Whether furniture is new or an antique, it is a valuable asset to any home and applying a window tint can help protect the beauty of your home and your investment.

Paint

Overtime painted interior walls will show signs of fading due to sunlight. High-quality paints will resist sun damage longer, but after a period of time, both latex and oil paints will lose the bright colours that they have when first applied. Many houses have large windows to let in natural light, offering an open feeling to these modern style homes, cottages, and loft-style apartments. With window film, windows can be free of drapes and blinds when privacy is not a concern. Now they can maintain the spacious feeling and have the confidence that the painted walls are protected from premature fading and discolouring.

Art & Photos

Artwork and family photos add to the beauty of a home but are also commemorate memories of loved ones. Some ways to protect these collections from sun damage is by putting them in UV protective picture frames or keeping them away from direct sunlight. For artwork that doesn’t have a glass frame, such as some large decorative pieces or original artwork, adds the needed solar protection.

You!

There is nothing like enjoying the view and warmth of a sunny day in the comfort of your home. However, many people think that because they are inside they are protected from UV rays. Even in the winter, or on a cloudy day, UV rays can cause damage to the skin. Window film lets home owners open their drapes and blinds every day, giving them the ability to enjoy the natural light and view with the confidence they are protected from harmful UV rays.
